Online program eligibility
Our fully online certificate program can admit domestic and international applicants.
The program can admit applicants in U.S. states that are members of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA). Please visit the NC-SARA website (new window) for a list of current member states.
Georgetown University does not currently accept applications or enrollment requests for online programs from residents of the following countries:
- North Korea
- Ukraine (Crimea and the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR) within Ukraine)

Technical capabilities for online courses
Our online program uses Canvas, YouTube, Google Drive and other platforms. Students should confirm that they have a reliable internet connection and the ability to access each of these platforms before applying/registering. Every effort is made to ensure that course content and materials can be accessed by all students, but we cannot guarantee this. A variety of circumstances may affect the ability to access course content and materials, including internet access issues, firewalls and hardware limitations. Students who are unable to access course content and materials will not be able to complete the program/course, and will receive a refund consistent with Georgetown’s Main Campus refund policy (new window).
List your postsecondary institutions in your application, and upload a transcript for each institution.
WES (new window) or NACES (new window) credential evaluation services are highly recommended for international transcripts.

Two letters of recommendation
Recommendation letters must be from previous professors, research mentors, or employers in a position to appraise your potential for graduate study.
Academic Statement of Purpose
Write an essay explaining why you are interested in pursuing this specific certificate and why you are a strong candidate for the program. Your response should be one to two pages, typed and double-spaced. Please address the following questions in your response:
- What are the specific academic and professional qualities you possess that could help you excel in this program?
- What goals do you hope to achieve if you are accepted into this program?

Optional: Statement on Diversity, Personal Background, and Contributions
Applicants to any Georgetown program may choose to submit an Optional Statement that addresses diversity, personal background and contributions to community. A detailed prompt for the statement can be found in the application.
We encourage you to consider applying for the Hoyas for Science Scholarship (new window), offered through Georgetown Biomedical Graduate Education. Please note that the scholarship has a similar prompt to the Optional Statement, and you can incorporate your Optional Statement text into your essay for this scholarship application.
If Applicable: TOEFL/IELTS score
All applicants are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language sufficient to meet the admission requirement of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Follow the TOEFL/IELTS instructions in Admissions FAQ (new window) to determine whether you need to send us test scores to prove your English language proficiency.
Tuition & Scholarships
All students pay the per-credit rate for courses. Our certificates are 12-credit programs.
Federal employees may be eligible for the Federal Academic Alliance Scholarship. The scholarship application is due 14 days after confirming your intent to enroll in our program.
Need-based financial aid is available in the form of federal and private loans. It is recommended that you begin the process of applying for financial aid as soon as you are accepted. You may use the Estimated Cost of Attendance information in determining federal loan amounts; this program falls under Biomedical Graduate Education > Biomedical Graduate Programs.
